South Holland District Council and The Spalding United Youth Foundation have agreed a new long-term lease for Monkshouse playing fields, as they bid to improve community sports provision in the town.
Under the 50-year agreement the Foundation, who are a registered charity dedicated to supporting grassroots football and youth development, would take over the management and maintenance of the field and changing facilities, using it as a hub for activities, clubs and games.
Whilst there would be increased footballing presence at the park, the existing popular play area and other access will remain available for the public to enjoy.
The move is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting health, wellbeing and active lifestyles across the district, including through the ongoing £28.3m redevelopment of the Castle Activity and Fitness Centre site in Spalding, which is due to open to the public in early 2027.
By working with a dedicated community partner, the council aims to unlock new opportunities for participation in sport, particularly for young people, whilst helping secure the future of a valued community space. The Foundation also intends to attract external funding to further improve the site, increasing access and enhancing facilities for residents.
Councillor Henry Bingham, portfolio holder for assets and strategic planning, said: “This would be a positive step forward for Monkshouse Playing Fields and the wider community, working in partnership with the Foundation to help secure investment into the site and local area, ensuring it can be used to its full potential and continue to be available for local residents, all whilst saving the taxpayer money in the process.
“The council remains committed to making the best use of its assets, and this proposal allows us to do that while supporting grassroots sport and creating more opportunities for residents to get active.”
Mark Cocks, Chairman of Spalding United Youth Foundation, said: “The Spalding United Youth Foundation is committed to transforming the Monkshouse facility into a modern, inclusive, and community focused hub that will inspire future generations. Our vision is to refurbish the existing pavilion and create a safe, welcoming environment for young people, while also providing a high-quality space for families and the wider community to enjoy and use together.
