The leader of North Lincolnshire Council has called for a banking hub to be established in Ashby to serve people in Ashby, Ashby Lakeside, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham and parts of Kingsway and Lincoln Gardens.
Cllr Rob Waltham has written to LINK, the organisation responsible for assessing access to cash and banking services, asking for a formal Cash Access Assessment for Ashby.
Ashby Central and Ashby Lakeside alone have a combined population of more than 16,000, with the wider catchment taking the potential population served to well over 30,000.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Ashby is a major centre serving a large and growing population, but residents and businesses no longer have access to a bank branch there.
“A banking hub would support residents, help local businesses manage cash and strengthen an already important shopping and service centre.”
The council has told LINK it is willing to provide further evidence on population, retail activity, transport links and potential locations for a hub.
Cllr John Davison, cabinet member community wellbeing urban (Ashby, Bottesford and Scunthorpe) said: “We have already seen in Brigg and Barton how banking hubs can provide a practical solution when communities lose traditional bank branches.
“Ashby now deserves the same consideration. It has the population, the retail centre and the wider catchment to make a strong case for a hub of its own.”
The council already provides free parking in Ashby, making it easier for residents to access local shops and services, with hundreds of thousands of free two-hour parking sessions used each year.
Cllr Waltham added: “We have made a commitment to back independent retailers and local centres across North Lincolnshire. Free parking is part of that, and attracting services such as banking hubs is another important part of keeping places like Ashby thriving.
“We want people to be able to shop locally, use local services and support local businesses without having to travel elsewhere for essential services.”
