Celebrations as two longstanding South Holland District Councillors mark 50 years of service
There were celebrations at South Holland District Council when two longstanding councillors marked 50 years of service.
Councillors Bryan Alcock and Chris Brewis, who were first elected in May 1976, were joined by other members and council officers at a special presentation ahead of the authority’s annual general meeting.
To mark the occasion, The Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Toby Dennis, presented Couns Alcock and Brewis with Long Service Award certificates and Coun Nick Worth, Leader of South Holland District Council, along with Coun Paul Barnes, Leader of the Independent Group, presented them each with a commemorative memory box, along with an inscribed pen set, as a token of appreciation.
Acknowledging their remarkable achievement and years of public service, Coun Worth said: “If you mention Sutton Bridge, you automatically think of Chris Brewis – the man in a white hat - or you think of Crowland and you automatically think of Bryan Alcock.
“Chris has the most amazing knowledge, I would describe him as a walking encyclopedia. He has been a brilliant scrutiny member over many years, with his intimate knowledge of flooding and drainage boards, planning and trains.
“Bryan was for many years Chairman of planning. And when I started 27 years ago he was almost regarded as a god – some might think he still is. For around 25 years he has been chairman of the scrutiny committee and has that horrible knack of asking the one question you really don’t want him to ask.
“They are both a credit to South Holland District Council and their achievements over 50 years are phenomenal.
“It is therefore only right that we honour and salute these two councillors for making a real difference to South Holland and, in particular, to Crowland and Sutton Bridge.”
Coun Brewis said: “It was a surprise to me to hear such positive remarks about my 50 years!
“I have many, many memories - most of them positive.
